20-30 repetitions. Perform every hour while awake. None

Contraindications

  • Avoid if you have a diagnosed DVT (deep vein thrombosis)

Benefits

  • Prevents deep vein thrombosis after surgery
  • Maintains ankle range of motion
  • Promotes blood circulation in the lower leg
  • Can be performed immediately post-operatively

Ankle pumps are the first exercise prescribed after hip or knee replacement surgery. They are safe to perform immediately after surgery and help prevent one of the most serious complications of joint replacement: deep vein thrombosis. This simple movement activates the calf muscle pump to promote venous return.

How to Perform

Lie on your back with legs straight. Slowly point your toes away from you, then pull them back toward you. Move your ankle through its full range of motion. Perform this pumping motion 20-30 times every hour while awake. Do this for both feet.
