Jaw Relaxation Exercise

beginner
5-10 repetitions. Hold for 5-10 seconds. 3-5 times daily. None

Suitable For

Contraindications

  • Avoid if you have acute jaw locking
  • Do not force the jaw beyond comfortable range

Benefits

  • Reduces tension in the masseter and temporalis muscles
  • Promotes proper jaw resting posture
  • Decreases TMJ pain and clicking
  • Prevents bruxism (teeth grinding)

TMJ disorders often involve excessive tension in the jaw muscles from clenching, grinding, or poor posture. The jaw relaxation exercise teaches the correct resting position of the jaw where the teeth are slightly apart and the jaw muscles are relaxed.

How to Perform

Place your tongue lightly on the roof of your mouth behind your front teeth. Let your jaw relax and your teeth separate slightly. Breathe deeply and feel your jaw muscles soften. Hold this relaxed position for 5-10 seconds. Repeat several times throughout the day.
