Tendonitis & Tendinopathy

Understanding Tendonitis and Tendinopathy

Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon, the strong fibrous tissue that connects muscle to bone. When a tendon is overloaded — either through repetitive use or a sudden increase in activity — micro-tears develop, leading to pain, swelling, and dysfunction.

Tendinopathy is the more accurate term for chronic tendon conditions, as most long-standing tendon pain involves tendon degeneration (tendinosis) rather than active inflammation. Common sites include the Achilles tendon, patellar tendon, rotator cuff, lateral elbow (tennis elbow), and medial elbow (golfer's elbow).

Our Treatment Approach

Our physiotherapy programme is based on the latest evidence for tendon rehabilitation. We begin with load management — identifying and temporarily reducing the activities that aggravate your tendon. We then introduce isometric exercises for pain relief, followed by eccentric strengthening as the cornerstone of treatment. We address biomechanical factors and gradually progress your activity levels to ensure a safe return to sport or work.

Benefits of Physiotherapy for Tendonitis & Tendinopathy

Evidence-Based Care

Eccentric loading exercises are the gold-standard treatment for tendinopathy, proven to stimulate tendon healing and collagen remodelling.

Avoid Injections

Conservative physiotherapy often resolves tendonitis without the need for corticosteroid injections, which have mixed long-term outcomes.

Address Root Causes

We identify and correct the biomechanical, training, and ergonomic factors that caused your tendon problem.

Prevent Recurrence

Progressive strengthening, load management education, and return-to-sport programmes prevent re-injury.
