Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy is an ancient therapeutic technique that has been adapted and refined for modern physiotherapy practice. It involves placing cups on the skin to create a negative pressure (suction) effect that lifts the underlying tissues. This suction increases blood flow, reduces muscle tension, and promotes healing in the treated area.

Modern cupping used in physiotherapy differs significantly from traditional approaches. Our therapists use silicone or plastic cups with controlled suction levels, applied over specific muscle groups based on clinical assessment. The cups may be left in place (stationary cupping) or moved across the skin (dynamic or glide cupping) combined with massage oil for a therapeutic effect.

At Actilife, cupping therapy is used as a complementary technique alongside manual therapy, dry needling, and exercise prescription. It is particularly effective for treating large areas of muscle tension, chronic back pain, and sports-related muscle tightness.

Key Benefits of Cupping Therapy

Deep Muscle Relief

The suction effect reaches deep into muscle tissues, releasing tension that is difficult to address with manual pressure alone.

Increased Blood Flow

The negative pressure draws fresh blood into the area, delivering oxygen and nutrients while removing metabolic waste products.

Reduced Pain

Cupping stimulates sensory nerves that can help reduce pain signals and promote relaxation of tight muscles.

Improved Lymphatic Drainage

The suction effect helps move lymphatic fluid, reducing swelling and promoting detoxification of tissues.

Enhanced Tissue Mobility

Lifting and gliding techniques help release fascial restrictions and improve the glide between tissue layers.
