Spinal Stenosis
Understanding Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses the spinal cord and/or nerve roots. It most commonly occurs in the lumbar spine (lower back) and cervical spine (neck) due to age-related degenerative changes. The narrowing reduces the space available for the neural elements, causing pain, numbness, and weakness.
Lumbar spinal stenosis typically causes symptoms in the legs with walking or standing (neurogenic claudication). Cervical spinal stenosis can cause symptoms in the arms and hands and in severe cases can affect the entire body below the neck.
Our Treatment Approach
Our physiotherapy programme focuses on symptom management and functional improvement. We use flexion-based exercises to create more space in the spinal canal, core and hip strengthening to improve stability, manual therapy for joint and soft tissue restrictions, and gait training. We also provide education about activity modification and ergonomic strategies for daily living.

Benefits of Physiotherapy for Spinal Stenosis
Improve Walking Tolerance
Flexion-based exercises and pacing strategies help you walk longer distances without pain or heaviness in your legs.
Reduce Nerve Symptoms
Manual therapy, nerve gliding exercises, and postural retraining reduce nerve root compression and radiating symptoms.
Avoid Surgery
Many spinal stenosis patients manage their symptoms effectively with conservative physiotherapy, avoiding the need for decompression surgery.
Core Stabilisation
Strengthening the deep spinal stabilisers supports the spine in a flexed posture that relieves stenosis symptoms.
