Joint Mobilisation & Manipulation
Joint mobilisation and manipulation are core manual therapy techniques used by physiotherapists to treat joint stiffness, pain, and restricted movement. These techniques involve skilled, specific movements applied to joints to restore their normal range of motion.
Mobilisation involves gentle, oscillatory movements applied to a joint at varying speeds and amplitudes. Manipulation (often called a 'grade V' technique) is a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust applied at the end of a joint's range — often producing a characteristic 'pop' or 'crack'.
These techniques are supported by extensive research and are effective for conditions like spinal pain, frozen shoulder, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, and peripheral joint restrictions. Our therapists are trained in Mulligan Concept, Maitland, and other evidence-based manual therapy approaches.
Key Benefits
Restored Joint Mobility
Graded mobilisation techniques progressively improve range of motion in stiff joints.
Pain Reduction
Manual therapy stimulates mechanoreceptors that inhibit pain signals, providing rapid pain relief.
Improved Joint Nutrition
Movement stimulates synovial fluid production, nourishing the joint cartilage and slowing degeneration.
Neuromuscular Re-education
Restoring normal joint movement patterns retrains the nervous system for better motor control.
